What Is Upcycling
WHAT IS UPCYCLING?
Upcycling is the coolest and most creative form of recycling that has been invented. It is the process of taking an item that was destined for the landfill (or an inefficient recycling facility) and turning it into a different useful or creative item.
What about recycling?
I definitely do not want to discourage recycling. The only problem is that most recycled products are not as strong as the items they were recycled from. I know for sure that this is the case with plastic. The processes used to recycle plastic, glass and paper consume a ton of energy and the market for recycled items is not really that big yet.
So, PLEASE recycle whenever you have the chance. But why not just upcycle yourself and give those plastic bags (or newspapers or glass jars or magazines) a whole new life as a completely different item that can be reused over and over without the massive energy cost of recycling and possibly ending up in the landfill a few days later?
If, after announcing your new upcycling endeavors to your entire family, you end up with TONS more plastic bags than you know what to do with, please either work super hard to make plarn with them all so they are more manageable or send some to the recycling center. Throwing them in the trash just means they will still be in the trash when my grandkids come along (and I’m only 24 with no kids right now!). Plastic doesn’t decompose.
Benefits of Upcycling:
* encourages consumers to consume less
* decreases the amount of “garbage” going to the dump
* prolongs the life of products that otherwise have a short lifespan
* stimulates creativity
* provides a cheap art form that anyone can do with the tools and supplies laying around the house (or in the garbage can or
* cuts down on the amount of lesser quality recycled items out there
What can you make with upcycling?
Anything can be made with upcycling. I have made purses, picture frames, journals, rope, yarn, envelopes, bags, jewelry and many other things. I have seen quilts, pillows, clothes, shoes, candles, artwork, wallpaper, underwear, furniture, swings, lamps, vases, walls, baskets, houses, toys, dolls, wedding decorations, wedding dresses and tons of other beautiful things made from upcycled materials.
What a beautiful way to care for this beautiful planet!
